All Providence Health Care staff and medical staff are invited to participate in the 2022 GreenCare Survey.
Through this survey, the Energy and Environmental Sustainability Team (EES) measures the success of programs and initiatives to understand priorities and staff knowledge of surrounding environmental issues, and to act as an engagement tool, both with staff as well as leadership. EES uses this survey to collect metrics for one of the Active and Clean Transportation Performance Indicators.
Last year, the survey also provided additional insight on the impact that COVID-19 is having on the energy use and transportation habits of our workforce. 1866 staff responded to the survey in 2021, representing various departments, positions and locations across the LMHOs.
Key learnings from last year’s survey include:
- 71% of respondents reported that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the actions that they take to reduce environmental impact in health care
- 20% of commutes have been replaced by working from home
- Active commutes up 7%

Sustainability is one of the five foundational principles of Providence’s Mission: Forward Strategic Plan that guides our efforts and serves as a perpetual framework for our actions. This means a commitment to reducing our environmental footprint to achieve — and hopefully exceed — national benchmarks for sustainability, green initiatives, and minimal impact.
