Earlier last month, Providence Health Care (PHC) and Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) proudly celebrated the remarkable achievements of the sixth cohort of the Physician Quality Improvement (PQI) program. The graduation ceremony, held at VanDusen Gardens in Vancouver, showcased the dedication and innovation efforts of 19 physicians from diverse communities of care.

Under the guidance of PQI Chair Dr. Kelly Mayson, the steering committee, and PQI team, the program has continually empowered physicians to enhance their skills, optimize patient outcomes, and foster a culture of continuous improvement, implementing effective strategies to drive positive change in health care delivery.

Dr. Janet Kow, Vice President, Quality & Safety at PHC, shared her perspective on the significance of quality initiatives conducted by those with firsthand experience.

“Quality initiatives that appear small in scale are the truth north star that guides us towards delivering optimal care to patients. They contribute to building a culture of excellence,” Kow emphasized.

Among the highlights of the ceremony were the exceptional action projects undertaken by the graduating physicians, showcasing their innovative and impactful contributions to patient care.

These projects addressed critical areas such as: Improving Rates of Primary Care Interventions for HIV Positive Clients at the John Ruedy Clinic  (Dr. Nathaniel Winata), Increasing Goals of Care Conversations Completed for Admissions to Mount Saint Joseph Hospital  (Dr. Nick Graham), Preoperative Multidisciplinary Review for Breast Cancer (Dr. Elaine McKevitt), Delivering Value for Patients with Shoulder Pain (Dr. Jeffrey Pike), and Dyad Care for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Patients (Dr. Judy Wolfe).

The PQI program’s sixth graduation ceremony at VanDusen Gardens not only celebrated the achievements of the cohort but also reinforced the importance of collaboration, continuous learning, and patient-centred care within the healthcare landscape. PHC and VCH remain committed to supporting physicians in their ongoing pursuit of excellence, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care across the region.

The Physician Quality Improvement (PQI) initiative is a province-wide initiative and a partnership between Vancouver Coastal Health, Providence Health Care, and the Specialist Services Committee (SSC)
